Early reviews for new Walking Dead spin-off about Daryl Dixon say it’s really good

While some fans are tired of this long-running story, one critic says the show is 'the best this franchise has been in years'.

While the original Walking Dead series has ended, it has spawned a bunch of spinoff shows to keep the story going.

One of those programmes focuses on Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and it's set after the events of The Walking Dead.

The first instalment is comprised of six episodes and it has already been renewed for a second season.

We'll get to experience the first episode later this month and it seems as though we could be in for a refreshing take on the franchise.

Critics who have been lucky enough to see the show before it officially airs say it's actually pretty good.

Aaron Pruner from TheWrap wrote: "Tightly packed in a polished and engaging six episodes, it seems that Scott Gimple’s universe has finally delivered a follow-up worth a pound of flesh."

TV Line's Charlie Mason added: "The setting is stunning, the score by David Sardy is magnificently cinematic, and the walkers are… let’s just say that they’re not your grandma’s, OK?"

Tessa Smith from Mama's Geeky said: "A fresh new take on things, that still feels somewhat familiar and fits in the world well. Easily the best this franchise has been in years."

David Opie from Digital Spy also commented: "Daryl Dixon begins with a mystery; how did everyone's favourite motorbike enthusiast end up in France? But the bigger question is how did this show end up being so good, especially at a time when The Walking Dead hasn't been firing on all cylinders?"

While there were some critics who said the show doesn't pack enough punch to warrant you dedicating several hours to it, there were definitely more positive reviews than negative.

The show begins in France where Dixon's arrival apparently 'sets off a violent chain of events that inadvertently puts a young boy at the heart of a growing religious movement in danger'.

We won't give much more away.

Clémence Poésy and Adam Nagaitis have also been cast in the show as new characters.

The series was meant to also feature the character of Carol Peletier, however she was written out due to 'logistical issues' with the actor.

Instead, the show has now pivoted to be primarily about Daryl Dixon.

Incredibly, it's the fifth spinoff show from The Walking Dead franchise and the sixth show all up.
