First trailer for Garfield starring Chris Pratt has been released

Fans can't wait to see it

The first trailer for The Garfield Movie has just been released and fans are delighted.

It seems Chris Pratt is going from strength to strength as he voices Garfield in the upcoming film.

Check out the trailer below:

Initially, the actor sparked widespread mockery when it was announced he would be voicing the titular character, but some fans seem to now be jumping on board.

This seems to becoming a pattern with Pratt, as he was also ridiculed after it was announced he would be playing Nintendo's Mario, in the-then upcoming Super Mario Bros. movie.

The Garfield Movie's trailer starts sweet enough, showing the origins of the orange tabby Persian cat and how he met his owner, John.

When John offers to share some of his food, the Italian food-loving feline comes out in full force, devouring everything in sight.

The trailer then proceeds to see typical Garfield comic antics before we are introduced to a new character, Garfield’s father, Vic (voiced by Samuel L. Jackson).

Garfield’s father then shows where the troublesome character got his devilish nature from with some pranks of his own.

Fans were quick to praise the trailer and insisted they can’t wait for its official release.

“This looks amazing I was kind of concerned about the art style but everyone acts and emotes exactly how they do in the comics,” one YouTube user wrote.

Another added: "As a major animation fan myself, this looks amazing! I’m glad Mark Dindal is finally directing another animated movie again! I can’t wait for May 2024!”

Someone else posted: “This looks way better than any of us expected."

“The fact that the trailer gets released on MONDAY is surprisingly fitting for Garfield. Sony knows what they're doing with the Garfield lore,” another said in relation to Garfield historically hating Mondays.

The Garfield Movie is set to hit cinemas on 24 May, 2024.

Despite the current positive reception, Pratt is unlikely to sway all his critics.

When it was announced in April that he would be playing the troublesome cat, the actor faced significant backlash.

One X user wrote: "Yet another example of casting the more popular person, not the person best for the role. This is sadly never going to stop being a big problem in Hollywood."

Another asked: "Did all the other men in Hollywood lose their voices?"

While a third questioned: "Who did he blackmail to get him these parts?"

Garfield had previously been voiced on the big screen by Bill Murray in two live-action CGI hybrid films.

Time will tell if Pratt is able to convince his skeptics he can bring Jim Davis’ comic character to life.
