Wednesday overtakes Stranger Things to become Netflix's most-watched show of all time

The Tim Burton series has come out on top after Netflix switched up how it scores its most popular content.

Wednesday has overtaken Stranger Things season four as the most-watched English-language series on Netflix.

Since 2021, Netflix has compiled its Top 10 list by total number of hours watched for TV shows and movies.

However, while most hours viewed meant that longer television shows and films had the upper hand, the streaming giant has altered how it determines its most popular content.

Now, the length of the show or movie will be taken into account, with popular titles assessed by their views rather than the number of hours watched.

As a result, Tim Burton’s Wednesday has overtaken season four of Stranger Things, which clearly benefited previously by its 13-hour run time clocking in 1.838 billion hour views.

While Wednesday generated 1.718 billion hours viewed.

But as the Jenna Ortega-led series is much shorter than the Duffer Brothers' sci-fi show, if you divide it by its runtime, the series become the most popular title, as Wednesday has 252 million views, as per Deadline.

Meanwhile, Stranger Things has only 140 million.

However, despite Netflix's new calculations, Squid Game is still the most popular series ever.

In January, Netflix confirmed that season two of Wednesday was underway.

The official Netflix Twitter account confirmed the good news with a very simple announcement, which read, ‘It’s official: Wednesday Season 2 is coming!!’ alongside a black heart emoji.

In case you’re not up to date, Wednesday follows a 16-year-old goth who attends Nevermore Academy and tries to solve a murder mystery.

Netflix’s description reads: “Wednesday's attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorised the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago - all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore.”

Ortega plays the titular role and is joined by Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams, Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams and Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley Addams.

During an interview with Variety’s Actors on Actors, the 20 year old actor spoke of the upcoming season, saying she wanted it to ‘lean into the horror more’.

“In preparation for a second season, we wanted to make sure that we could start the conversations earlier. I’m just so curious: I want to see the outfits, new characters, scripts,” she added.

“We’re ditching any romantic love interest, which is really great. We’re going to get bolder, more dark. I’ve never had to do a serious period piece before,” she continued.
