Amy Schumer has been forced to deny claims that she stole jokes from Twitter during her presenting gig at this year’s Oscars.

During her opening monologue, the comedian made a controversial joke at Leonardo DiCaprio’s expense, which no doubt had the audience cringing in their seats.

Her quip went: “Leonardo DiCaprio, what can I say about him? He has done so much to fight climate change and leave behind a cleaner, greener planet for his girlfriends.”

However, Schumer soon came under fire from Twitter users who managed to retrieve a very similar tweet from 2021.

Appearing on Watch What Happens Live! this week, the 40-year-old was forced to defend her creative integrity.

“OK. Well, I would like to say, I haven’t personally been on Twitter,” she responded, when asked about stealing the joke, the Daily Beast reports.

“I’ve had my assistant do it, just so I can remain alive and not kill myself.

"And also, that joke was written by Suli McCullough. But I thank you guys, always, for making sure that I don’t start thievery.”

Schumer then added: “I just got to do a lie-detector test on Vanity Fair and they asked me, thank God, ‘Have you ever stolen a joke?’ and I said no, and it was ‘that’s true’.

“So, everybody just chill. It’s crazy. I’m funny enough, I don’t need to steal s**t.”

Schumer's choice of jokes at this year’s Oscars has been the topic of much debate, after it was revealed that a number of her controversial jibes weren’t approved by The Academy.

On 2 April, the comedian made her first appearance post-Oscars at Las Vegas’ Mirage Theatre, where she revealed the jokes that didn’t quite make the cut.

Celebs on her hit list included James Franco and Joe Rogan and, most controversial of them all, Alec Baldwin.

Schumer had hoped to make a joke about the fatal shooting on the set of Rust, where Alec Baldwin accidentally shot cinematographer Halyna Hutchins due to a prop gun being misfired.

As per Vanity Fair, she said: "I want to preface these Oscar jokes by saying that my lawyer said not to say these. Don’t tell anybody and don’t get mad at me.

"Don’t Look Up is the name of a movie? More like don’t look down the barrel of Alec Baldwin’s shotgun. I wasn’t allowed to say any of that [at the Oscars], but you can just come up and [slap] someone."
