Ariana Grande admits being on 'a lot of antidepressants' in lowest time of her life

The star has hit back at body-shamers and has said there are 'different ways to look healthy'

Ariana Grande has said she was on a ‘lot of antidepressants’ during the lowest period of her life.

The 29-year-old shared a rare and revealing video on TikTok, in which she hit out at body-shamers and admitted to drinking alcohol while on antidepressants. You can see her talk about it here:

Grande started the video by saying that she ‘doesn’t like’ and ‘isn’t good at’ making such open comments about herself but said she felt compelled to speak out.

After stating that she was making the video to ‘address concerns’ from fans about her body, she went on to explain that comparisons between how she looks now and how she used to look can be damaging.

“The body that you’ve been comparing my current body to was the unhealthiest version of my body," she said.

"I was on a lot of antidepressants, drinking on them, eating poorly, and at the lowest point of my life when I looked the way you consider ‘my healthy’. But that, in fact, wasn’t ‘my healthy’.

“And I know I shouldn’t have to explain that but I do feel like maybe having an openness and some sort of vulnerability here will be… something good might come of it.”

Speaking more generally about body-shamers, she said: "I just wanted to address your concerns about my body and talk a little bit about what it means to be a person with a body and to be seen and to be paid such close attention to.

"I think we should be gentler and less comfortable commenting on people's bodies, no matter what.

"If you think you're saying something good or well intentioned, whatever it is: healthy, unhealthy, big, small, this, that, sexy, not sexy... we just shouldn't.

"We should really work towards not doing that as much."

Ariana said there are ‘ways to compliment someone’ or to simply ignore something that they don’t like without feeling the need to be mean or pass comment, stressing that ‘you never know where someone is coming from’.

Urging people to think before writing comments about people’s bodies, she added: “There are many different kinds of beautiful. There are many different ways to look healthy and beautiful.”

Grande finished her three-minute long video by telling fans it was important to be happy in their own skin ‘no matter what’.

"I just think you're beautiful and wanted to share some feelings," she said.
