The Marvels brought in a dismal $47 million at the box office on its opening weekend, making it the lowest opening weekend for a movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
According to Variety, the film was initially tracking to bring in $75 million to $80 million on the first weekend, however that was recently slashed to $60 million to $65 million.
Keep in mind, the film cost more than $200 million to produce.

The Marvels even surpassed 2008’s The Incredible Hulk as the lowest box office opening weekend ever, which generated $55.4 million, and Ant-Man, which brought home $57.2 million in 2015.
Not only has the film not had a great debut, but lukewarm reviews have also been rolling in, with many critics calling it ‘C grade’ and receiving 62 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes.
It’s no secret there’s a little superhero fatigue going on right now.

Disney CEO Bob Iger previously said that the plan to roll out an influx of movies and TV shows has potentially backfired.
It came after Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania had an underwhelming performance at the box office, generating $476 million, becoming one of the few films in the MCU not to break even in its theatrical run.
“There have been some disappointments. We would have liked some of our more recent releases to perform better,” Iger said, as per Variety.
“Not only did they [Marvel] increase their movie output, but they ended up making a number of television series, and frankly, it diluted focus and attention. That is, I think, more of the cause than anything,” he added.
According to CNBC News, the Disney boss even teased the idea that the MCU desperately needed some ‘newness’.

“Sequels typically worked well for us,” he said during the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference, as per the outlet.
“Do you need a third and a fourth for instance? Or is it time to turn to other characters?”
The Marvels has opened with $100 million less than the original, according to AP, which is a humungous drop.
Thankfully it's not the worst superhero performance at the box office.

Moribus tanked when it was released last year and only earned $39 million on the opening weekend.
However the worst goes to the 2015 reboot of Fantastic Four, which wasn't technically part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
That failed flick only managed to generate $25.6 million
