Tom Hiddleston suggests his ‘journey’ as Loki in the MCU is over

The Loki star heavily hinted it was over

It hasn't been a particularly positive week for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Not only did the latest instalment to the super popular superhero franchise The Marvels completely bomb in reviews by critics, but today, Loki star Tom Hiddleston has heavily hinted he may be planning to step back from the series.

Watch him speak about it below:

Loki wrapped up its second Disney+ season this week, and for the first time in months, British actor Hiddleston, 42, was able to talk about the series on Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show, after the SAG-AFTRA strike came to an end.

Speaking to the much-loved talk-show host, Hiddleston - who has played the role of charming Nordic god Loki in the MCU franchise for the last 14 years - appeared to be saying his goodbyes to the fan-favourite character.

Careful not to give away too many spoilers, the actor ominously said the latest instalment to his Disney+ series had been a great 'conclusion', suggesting this may be the end of the entire show.

Hiddleston described his career as Loki as a "journey".

"It's the conclusion to Season 2, [and] it's also a conclusion to Seasons 1 and 2," he explained on the show. "It's also the conclusion to six films, and 12 episodes, and 14 years of my life.

"14 years... I was 29 when I was cast. I'm 42 now. It's been a journey."

Marvel Studios is yet to confirm whether Hiddleston's character of Loki will be set to appear in any upcoming MCU movies.

Despite this, it looks as though the door is certainly open for a potential appearance in the two upcoming The Avengers sequels, The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars.

There may also be room for him in the forthcoming third instalment to the Deadpool series, being that the off-beat 'hero' franchise has often demonstrated its multiverse connections, so a Loki appearance could be justifiable.

After all, there are already rumours of Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr's return to the MCU franchise, despite officially stepping down some years ago.

But Hiddleston fans needn't worry about the star being absent from the silver screen, as he already has roles underway in other upcoming blockbusters.

He'll soon star as the titular character in the upcoming The Life of Chuck, a Stephen King story that has been adapted by Mike Flanagan, the genius behind prior King adaptations, Doctor Sleep and Gerald's Game.

Hiddleston's questionable 'departure' from the series comes just days after the latest MCU instalment The Marvels landed a mediocre score of just 62 percent on review-aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer.
