But it’s not just fans who love this film, it also has amassed a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, as critics revere in its impressive plot line and stunning visuals.

As a directorial debut from Remi Weekes, this story shows Doctor Who’s Matt Smith and Loki’s Wunmi Mosaku navigate the dangerous world of a war-torn South Sudan and the journey to escaping.

The synopsis reads: “A refugee couple makes a harrowing escape from war-torn South Sudan, but then they struggle to adjust to their new life in an English town that has an evil lurking beneath the surface.”
If you’re expecting something popping out to scare you, you’re exactly right. However, His House balances absolute gore and gripping scenes with emotional reprieve.
One critic shared: “The film has much to say about grief, guilt, assimilation and the on-going refugee crisis. And on top of all that, it's also a nifty nerve-jangler.”
Another added: “The twist, when it comes, feels simultaneously inevitable and devastating, while the coda accesses a hard-earned ambivalence about what it means to make a house a home...”

Fans and critics alike were wowed by the topics of fierce survival, unnerving societal issues and strange supernatural elements.
The film was released in 2020, and with big names in the cast line up, we’re wondering how it flew under the radar for so long.
Its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival in January of that year created buzz shortly before Netflix decided to pick it up. It’s a good thing they did as a year later, His House won the director BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer and two other nominations.
It’s clear to see why he won as reviews of the film gushed about his directorial talent, especially for it being his debut feature.
