Shopper Shocked To Find Jar Of Spinach That Cost $50

Popeye once said he was strong to the finish 'cause he eats his spinach' - but not when it costs bloody $50

Prepare to be aghast at the cost of living: if you've got a taste for creamed spinach, you'll need to hand over $50 for this jar.

I don't judge people for where they shop. If you want a premium meal deal for your dinner, why wouldn't you go to Marks & Spencer? If you've got a hankering for Greggs sausage rolls at home, why wouldn't you shop at Iceland?

Everyone has their favourite supermarket (more often than not, it'll be the one closest to them - for me, it's Tesco), and everyone has an irrational hatred for another (I shan't share mine here). However, surely we're all in agreement that this spinach takes the p**s.

When you venture out into the big cities, you can pretty much guarantee you'll need to pay a little more for your everyday things. For some reason, there's a premium; goodbye £2 ($2.60) pints and vodkas, hello... well, at least £5 ($6.50) for everything.

It's a different kettle of fish - or in this case, jar of spinach - in Los Angeles, though.

As documented by the Overheard TikTok account, a big ol' jar of creamed spinach from Erewhon Market - picture those supermarkets absolutely packed with fruit and veg that always seem to feature in romantic comedies - will set you back an eye-watering $50 (£38).

Would you pay this for spinach?

For reference, good creamed spinach only has a few ingredients: spinach, butter, milk, cream, flour, onion and whatever seasoning and herbs you like. For the sake of easiness, let's say salt, pepper and nutmeg.

How about we price this up at Tesco in the UK, and to keep it fair, we'll use organic products, given that's Erewhon's USP.

The jar of spinach seen in the video is a hefty 907g. If we pick up four 200g bags of organic spinach from Tesco, that'll set you back £7.20 ($9.40). You'll need a pint of milk, so that's £0.60 ($0.80).

Think of all the... spinach and spaghetti you could eat.

A whole tub of butter will cost you around £1.90 ($2.49) - which you could use for toast and other cooking after the spinach - while a tub of single cream will cost £0.70 ($0.90), a kilogram of flour will cost £0.70 ($0.90) and a small onion will cost just £0.10 ($0.13). In terms of seasoning, we'll call it £3 ($3.93) to be generous.

Before we add it up, think of the value: you won't use an entire tub of salt, pepper, rosemary or butter for this spinach, and it takes less than half an hour to make yourself - let's face it, it's delicious mush, it doesn't require a huge amount of finesse.

For all that, it would cost £14.20, which roughly exchanges to $18.60 - that's a ridiculous saving.
